The new omicron coronavirus strain sweeping the globe may cause even more havoc, as it attempts to overburden health care workers already dealing with a massive increase of delta situations and disrupt Christmas for the second straight season.
Traveling Will Increase The Delta And Omicron Variant COVID Cases
The United States government announced that their focus is not implementing a shutdown because earlier the vaccines were not easily available. Now the condition is completely different as vaccines and booster shots are widely available and tend to offer coverage against the bacteria’s deadliest repercussions. Also, more than 60 percent of the American population is fully vaccinated and around 30 percent of the individuals have received booster shots.
Scientists and medical researchers around the globe are claiming that the omicron version of Covid 19 is relatively mild overall than the delta.
But the latest studies have found it can become severe in some time and will spread much faster. Also, there are high chances of community transmission of the newly detected omicron variant in the United States.
With the winter season and Christmas holidays around the corner, more people tend to travel to their homes to celebrate the biggest festival of the year. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 80 percent of the omicron cases in the US had international travel history and the experts are panicking over the situation as the domestic traveling will increase and it will invite more omicron cases.
It has been expected by the medical agencies that approximately 100 million Americans are expected to leave home for the Christmas weekend. Last year fewer people traveled due to lockdowns and other major restrictions imposed by the Central Government due to the non-availability of the vaccines.
This year more than 30 percent increase in domestic traveling is expected as compared to the previous. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the unvaccinated people are more prone to the new variant and the rise in indoor and outdoor gatherings this year during the Christmas and New year will lead to an increase in the omicron cases in the United States.
Some states in the US have already started feeling the essence of increased cases. In New York, the cases have tripled in a span of a month and doubled in just 4 days. There were more than 21,0000 confirmed cases in New York and around 3800 hospital admissions on Saturday.
Also, in States like New Jersey and New York around 13-15 percent of the Omicron cases. Overall omicron variant infection rate has increased from 1 percent to 3 percent in just one weeks’ time frame.
According to Center for Disease Control Director Rochelle Walensky, initial results suggest that omicron is much more transmissible than the delta subtype. As per the reports, Corona testing in metropolitan areas is getting overcrowded as citizens of all ages rush to get assessed before the holiday breaks. The health experts are concerned that overcrowding in health care facilities will give the right to the Omicron version to grow much faster.
